Being sick is no fun.
On Friday night we met Liz and Juan at Caffe Del Mar in the West Village and had a very nice dinner. Definitely enjoyed my chicken parmagiana. Lori, if you happen to read this - good recommendation!
After dinner, Jenn and I went to the Comedy Cellar (best comedy club in NYC) and Liz and Juan went to a friends "last day of work" get together at a bar.
At the Comedy Cellar - we got to see Dave Attell, Robert Kelly, Godfrey (our favorite of the night), Bobby Collins, John Joseph, Sherrod Small, and Keith Robinson. All in a basement that holds 150 people. Had a great time at the show, but I was disappointed that Jim Norton unexpectedly dropped off of the bill. He is one of my favorite comedians, and we even saw him walking around outside before the show. That's the catch of the Comedy Cellar though....acts are not guaranteed, and sometimes surprise guests show up. The cover is always $15 which is a great deal for NYC.
Got home at 2:30am and a few hours later is when I started feeling like complete and utter crap! I've been home and mostly in bed for the last 48 hours and have had a sore throat which is now feeling better, but congestion and a runny nose that has not gone away at all. I hate the feeling of being stuck in the apartment because I am not well enough to do anything. I've also been waking up every hour or two just to blow my nose which is annoying. Hopefully this goes away soon. I am still waiting to hear back from a certain company that has interviewed me twice and has called one of my references.
A few hours ago we ordered delivery from Firehouse Tavern (www.firehousetavern.com). We got boneless wings and fries and they were good!!!! But I think the medium wing sauce (might as well have been hot!) made my nose more runny than before. I'll have to check this place out again when I feel better.
I'd like to thank Jenn for taking care of me! She is an amazing wife. I owe her big time.

Alright...after posting these pictures...I realized that we haven't done a good job with the picture taking. I promise that will get better! ;) The apartment is almost done as far as set up and organization, so those pics are coming soon.

So much for the afterglow.....
Today Jenn and I had met my cousin Jesse in midtown and had lunch with him which was great. It's really nice to be able to see cousins that I never got to spend a lot of time with when I lived in Florida.
Then we went to Macy's Herald Square to see what kind of winter jackets and coats they have in right now. Not too many though. We also got some pictures put on cd, which I think Jenn should be getting online tomorrow.
Jenn wanted to stay home and I decided to go down to Webster Hall (11th St and 4th Ave) and see if I can get into the Everclear/Soul Asylum/Cracker show on one of the band's guest lists. After waiting around for a little while and not having any luck talking to any band members because of all the security guards at the side door, something good happened. Somebody came up to me and asked if I needed a ticket. He said he had an extra because his friend couldn't go and he would sell it to me for $15! Way better than the $35 cover, so I bought it.
Show Review:
Everclear, Soul Asylum, Cracker, Kevin Kinney (of Drivin' and Cryin')
Kevin Kinney kicked off the show with a 20 minute solo set which wasn't too bad. He played about 5 songs and was pretty good.
Next up was Cracker who I haven't seen since Zetafest in south Florida in the mid 90's. Cracker was known for the single "Low" (which they ended with)....I didn't know any other songs, but I thought they were ok. Not as good as they were when I saw them years ago, but not too shabby.
Soul Asylum is a band I've never seen live. They actually really impressed me! A lot of catchy pop/rock songs and they put on a great live show. The only song I knew from them is "Runaway Train"...but I enjoyed their set and they sounded great.
Everclear. The one band on this bill that I actually love. Unfortunately, they were pretty good, but tonight was not one of their better shows at all. They had a LOT of sound issues. Art was breaking a lot of guitar strings. The new drummer was having all kinds of troubles with his drum set and broken snares, etc. The sound for their set was worse than it was for the other bands (and they were the headliner!). Art knew it and kept asking the crowd "Does everything sound alright out there?"...but you could easily see the frustration.
As far as the setlist went, it was a pretty typical Everclear set....lots of hits....this is what I can remember, but it's been a LONG day. I know I'm forgetting some.

New York City Blog #2: Coney Island, Baby
I didn't expect to write this soon, but it was quite the interesting day today.
It started off with me having a second interview with a certain company, and I thought it went really well! Only time will tell.
Sorry for the delay in pictures, I promise they will come sooner or later. We just need to get to a store and transfer them onto a cd since Jenn's camera isn't compatible with Windows Vista.
After the interview, I came home and relaxed for an hour before Jenn and I were off to Coney Island. We noticed that our street had movie trailers lined up down the entire block. I asked a woman who was working by the trailers what was going on and she said they are filming "Night at the Museum 2!" It makes sense being that we are right next to the American Museum of Natural History, but wow, how cool.
Our first stop in Coney Island was the Original Nathan's Hot Dogs. I admit, this was surreal. What a legendary place to finally be at. As far as the actual hot dogs and cheese fries go - truthfully, I didn't see much of a difference between the Coney Island location and the Orlando International Airport location, but that's just me! Ambiance was they key here.
Our second stop of the day was Astroland (the famous amusement park with the Cyclone roller coaster). On Tuesdays in August, if you go after 4pm, you get "All you can ride" 2 for 1 admission. This sounded like a GREAT idea to do for 2 and a half hours before the concert that night, but that quickly took a very wrong turn. We went on a ride that many of you have seen at carnivals. Here, it's called the Million Dollar Break Dancer. (Go to http://www.astroland.com/ and look up that ride if you want to see a picture) It basically spun us around full speed in so many directions for about 6 or 7 minutes to the point where it had us both completely bent out of shape for the next two hours. Jenn got off the ride and puked immediately right next to the ride. And I got off the "ride" and was so incredibly dizzy and nauseous that for the next 2 hours I couldn't even think straight. No exaggeration. I was not me for 2 HOURS.
Needless to say, we did not ride The Cyclone. We went to Astroland and paid $26 to make ourselves feel sick!
The only thing I wanted from 4:30pm on was my bed at that point, but Kenny Vance and the Planotones kept me in Coney Island. For those of you unaware of Kenny Vance, I consider him to be the best doo wop singer around. (http://www.planotones.com/)
The Planotones played for an HOUR AND FORTY FIVE MINUTES. No opening act. To say the least, I was ecstatic! I can't remember the exact order of songs, and I'm missing 5 or 10 of them too....but WOW, what a show!!!!!!! Jenn's allergies were acting up and she is not into doo wop music like I am. I think she was hoping he would've played a much shorter set, but I loved every minute of it.

New York City Blog Number 1
Well, we're here!!!! I have been asked to write about some of the happenings in NYC, so I am writing them now for you all to enjoy.
We got here twelve days ago (Tuesday, August 5th) and we are starting to get settled in now. Our apartment is EXCELLENT and is in a perfect location on the Upper West Side (half a block from Central Park). Our furniture finally arrived this past Wednesday after 8 nights of having nothing but an air mattress and the clothes in our luggage! We finally got cable and internet on Thursday morning so I feel connected to the world again.
The job hunt is tough. We've each had an interview and have talked to some people on the phone so far, but nothing has came through yet. It's still very early in the game though, so we can't be discouraged. Honestly, there's really not a lot to say about it until there is some real news. We just have to keep sending out resumes and making phone calls and see where it goes.
Jenn is still getting over an upper respiratory infection and hasn't been 100% for a week now. Luckily, she's almost completely better.
Will Hoge at Union Hall - On our first night in NYC, we took the train to see Will Hoge play in a bar that has a capacity of 92 people! And it was packed. Considering Will is one of our favorite performers, it was a real treat to see him in such an intimate setting with such an awesome and attentive crowd.
"Mamma Mia" movie - We went to see this a couple nights later and also really enjoyed it. It was much better than the show. I have to admit, ABBA wrote some great songs. Meryl Streep was actually a really good singer, and Pierce Brosnan gave us some good laughs with his attempt at singing.
Alright, onto the Broadway related stuff!!!!
NYC has something for one month out of every year called Broadway in Bryant Park. Every Thursday, from July 15-August 15, there is a free lunchtime concert right in the middle of Bryant Park in midtown. It's an hour long concert and all five shows do 2-3 songs. No costumes, just singing and some dancing. I went on August 7th and August 14th.
Broadway in Bryant Park (August 7th) featured performances from Spring Awakening, Gypsy, Xanadu, Mary Poppins, and Wicked. I had a great time and especially enjoyed watching Kerry Ellis perform "The Wizard and I" from Wicked. I also loved the Mary Poppins performance.
Broadway in Bryant Park (August 14th) featured performances from Legally Blonde, Rent, Grease, Young Frankenstein, and a soon to come out show called 13. I loved last weeks show, but this week was amazing!!! I got to see Bailey Hanks sing "Omigod You Guys" "Bend and Snap" and "So Much Better" from Legally Blonde. I'm sure a ton of you watched the MTV reality show, but for those that didn't, she won the role of Elle Woods on the show. Also, seeing the Grease cast perform "Summer Nights," "Greased Lightning," and "We Go Together" was fantastic. They were excellent. Young Frankenstein, which is my favorite show, had another dud of a performance (Tony performance was horrible) that didn't even show for a second how good of a show it is.
Jenn and I went to Chelsea Market which was a lot of fun. That's where the Food Network is located. The Chelsea Market has all kinds of specialty bakeries and other eateries. We tried the Lobster Bisque at "The Lobster Place" which was really, really good. They get all their fish fresh that morning as we saw on a Food Network special.
That night we headed to Bay Ridge which is in Brooklyn to go hang out with one of Jenn's old co-workers, Lisa, who moved back to NY. She had a little birthday shindig which was fun.....always nice to meet new people.
While Jenn was sick and staying home, I attempted a few Broadway lotteries. Certain shows hold a lottery 3 hours before the show and if you win, you get front row tickets for only $21-$25! Monday night I tried Avenue Q and lost. Tuesday night I tried Hairspray, Wicked, and Avenue Q and lost all three! Thursday night I tried Avenue Q, and the third time was the charm! I won a front row ticket for $21.50!
Avenue Q - What a fun show! Picture Sesame Street on crack. Puppets that curse and have sex all while a good story is being told. Good times...I really enjoyed the music in the show and I liked how you really felt for the puppets and started to believe they were people.
The next night Jenn was feeling ok enough to see a show and we attempted the Hairspray lottery. Jenn's name was called first and we won two front row tickets for $25 each!
Hairspray - I loved the movie last year. It was actually my favorite movie of 2007. Needless to say, we were both really excited. The seats were amazing!! George Wendt (Norm from "Cheers") is playing Edna Turnblad and the show is also currently starring Ashley Parker Angel of O-Town fame as Link, former teen R&B sensation Tevin Campbell as Seaweed, and Aubrey O'Day from the band Danity Kane as Amber. Marrissa Perry was excellent in the lead role of Tracy. This show was AWESOME!! The show is completely loaded with hits from the opening of "Good Morning, Baltimore" to the closing of "You Can't Stop The Beat"...the dancing was top notch and we were so close that we could really see George Wendt really sweating it out during his songs. We were close enough that we could touch the actors if we wanted to.
Tonight we are going to see the new WOODY ALLEN movie "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and then getting a few more things we need from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
"Where's the food talk?" is what must be going through your head at this point. We are still getting familiar with the area but we've already had some great places!! Off the top of my head,
Big Nick's Burger Joint on 77th and Amsterdam makes a sick STUFFED GORGONZOLA BURGER. It's ridiculously good.
Arriba Arriba on 51st and 9th is really good too. We had that before "Hairspray"...Jenn loved her vegetarian burrito, and I loved my steak fajitas.
Matsu on Columbus and 83rd is a really cool Japanese place. I had the chicken tempura and Jenn had two different kinds of Sushi rolls.
Chirping Chicken on 77th and Amsterdam specializes in, you guessed it -chicken! Rotisserie chicken, chicken fingers, chicken nuggets, etc. Really good!
Harry's Burrito's on Columbus and 71st is very good. We had that before Mamma Mia and will definitely be back.
Sarita's Mac and Cheese is fantastic as always. The Buffalo Chicken "smac" is brilliant.
Gray's Papaya is still one of the top destinations in NYC. 2 of the best hot dogs and a drink for $3.50.....yum!
Hummus Place had a really nice Hummus Tahini dish which I enjoyed.
Levain Bakery, which was featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay, had the best chocolate chip walnut cookie I've ever had!

Hairspray - I loved the movie last year. It was actually my favorite movie of 2007. Needless to say, we were both really excited. The seats were amazing!! George Wendt (Norm from "Cheers") is playing Edna Turnblad and the show is also currently starring Ashley Parker Angel of O-Town fame as Link, former teen R&B sensation Tevin Campbell as Seaweed, and Aubrey O'Day from the band Danity Kane as Amber. Marrissa Perry was excellent in the lead role of Tracy. This show was AWESOME!! The show is completely loaded with hits from the opening of "Good Morning, Baltimore" to the closing of "You Can't Stop The Beat"...the dancing was top notch and we were so close that we could really see George Wendt really sweating it out during his songs. We were close enough that we could touch the actors if we wanted to.
Tonight we are going to see the new WOODY ALLEN movie "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and then getting a few more things we need from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
"Where's the food talk?" is what must be going through your head at this point. We are still getting familiar with the area but we've already had some great places!! Off the top of my head,
Big Nick's Burger Joint on 77th and Amsterdam makes a sick STUFFED GORGONZOLA BURGER. It's ridiculously good.
Arriba Arriba on 51st and 9th is really good too. We had that before "Hairspray"...Jenn loved her vegetarian burrito, and I loved my steak fajitas.
Matsu on Columbus and 83rd is a really cool Japanese place. I had the chicken tempura and Jenn had two different kinds of Sushi rolls.
Chirping Chicken on 77th and Amsterdam specializes in, you guessed it -chicken! Rotisserie chicken, chicken fingers, chicken nuggets, etc. Really good!
Harry's Burrito's on Columbus and 71st is very good. We had that before Mamma Mia and will definitely be back.
Sarita's Mac and Cheese is fantastic as always. The Buffalo Chicken "smac" is brilliant.
Gray's Papaya is still one of the top destinations in NYC. 2 of the best hot dogs and a drink for $3.50.....yum!
Hummus Place had a really nice Hummus Tahini dish which I enjoyed.
Levain Bakery, which was featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay, had the best chocolate chip walnut cookie I've ever had!
